Ready Set Automate! A STEM Adventure in Building Automation

Presented by:   Larry Chang

Wednesday, March 23 from 2:45 PM to 4:15 PM, Sonoma D

For many traditional students and adult learners, building automation is either largely unknown or a mystery. What does it mean to "automate" systems? While this might be easy to describe, it can be difficult for many novices to visualize how it works, much less if it might become a potential career path. To help with student and public outreach, BEST Center faculty (bestctr.org) have created working automated model buildings which use similar components to control small fans and lights. Two variations will be highlighted: one can be customized from cardboard while the other uses a Barbie dollhouse as a ready-made "structure." The goal is to provide tangible take-aways in addition to watching an entertaining video!! Attendees will receive a detailed list of materials and equipment and be able to request basic code to run devices without prior programming experience. Learn how to assemble and operate the models which can be used for displays or hands-on activities and understand their potential as recruiting tools for different audiences.
