Discussion is a powerful tool in the classroom. Class discussions are used primarily as a tactic to raise student engagement, often as an “icebreaker” activity or to activate students’ prior knowledge. But class discussions can also be a rich source of data that allow teachers to understand the thinking of their students. Current research explains how discussion can increase student learning, and support teachers in understanding and assessing student thinking.
