Brazing and Soldering: Copper Tubing and Processes

Program Description

Improperly installed refrigerant lines can result in system leaks. A leaky system will result in refrigerant emissions to the environment and an undercharged condition. Systems that operate with less than a full charge will be inefficient and consume more energy. Understanding the various types of copper tubing and how to properly join them during system installation is vital to the operation and lifespan of the system. This program covers the various joining methods, proper tools and their use, torch use and safety, and leak testing a completed installation.

Audience

This program can be incorporated into any HVACR educational curriculum that teaches installation of copper refrigerant lines, as part of your current program or can be used as a stand-alone course.

Wholesalers, manufacturers, and continuing education providers can use this program as a continuing education course to reinforce concepts in a 6-8-hour training program.

A Comprehensive Resource

Joining copper tubing with brazing, soldering, or flaring is an art as well as a necessary skill. This program is a comprehensive resource which provides students and practicing technicians with the information and knowledge necessary to install refrigerant-carrying copper lines properly and safely.

Areas of Competency

This program has been cross-walked or aligned to the HVAC Excellence Competency and Task List , to assist instructors in providing their students with the knowledge and skills necessary for employment in the HVACR industry.

Program Topics

  • Types of copper tubing
  • Cutting, swaging, and bending copper tubing
  • Torch safety and fundamentals
  • Brazing and soldering procedures

  • Leak testing

Training Manual © 2020 ESCO 20 Pages

Brazing and Soldering: Copper Tubing and Processes was written by HVACR instructors for HVACR instructors to simplify the instruction of installation of copper refrigerant lines.

The manual provides students and practicing technicians with the information and knowledge necessary to work with and install copper refrigerant lines. Various processes and joining methods are covered in detail to provide an in-depth resource that will benefit any type of HVACR program. It is full of color illustrations and a student worksheet is included at the end of the manual to review the material covered.

Main topics include: types of copper tubing, processes (such as cutting, bending, and swaging), proper tool use, torch safety, brazing, soldering, flaring, and leak testing.

See a sample of this book here .

Registered proctors can review a digital version of the manual, by logging in and visiting the resource center.

Instructor Resource Materials

PowerPoint presentation: The instructor resource materials include a 79 slide PowerPoint presentation that correlates directly with the training manual. Each slide within the presentation contains speaker notes that are designed to aid the instructor through the presentation and provide additional talking points. The answers to the End of Section Review questions are also included in the presentation.

Certification

A certification is available to validate that a person has the retained knowledge in a specific area necessary for employment in the HVACR industry. The exam covers; types of copper tubing, processes (such as cutting, bending, and swaging), proper tool use, torch safety, brazing, soldering, flaring, and leak testing.

Proctors can log in to review candidate test results and access detailed statistical reports. These reports help instructors pinpoint strengths and weaknesses in their instruction. Additionally, these reports aid the program in documentation for Perkins compliance.

Training Package

To accommodate the varying needs of each HVACR training program, this modular training package is available as a complete training solution (training manual, instructor resources and certification), or instructors can purchase the items they want separately.
