Training Program • Second Edition

System Performance, Maximizing Energy Efficiency

Studies continue to show that a large percentage of residential HVAC systems are not sized, installed, or started up in accordance with industry standards, manufacturer specifications, or local codes. The result is reduced energy efficiency, diminished system performance, and a shortened equipment lifespan.

System Performance, Maximizing Energy Efficiency, Second Edition provides the most up-to-date information needed to properly setup HVAC systems and verify their performance so they operate as designed and achieve their rated efficiency.

What This Program Covers

The instructional materials are divided into focused sections that may be used individually or combined to create a complete system performance training program:

  • Airflow
  • Critical Charge
  • Psychrometrics
  • Combustion

Each subject is detailed enough to use as stand-alone training but, in combination, provides a training course enabling a technician to become skilled and proficient at maximizing HVAC system efficiency.

Audience

The program is designed to be incorporated into HVACR school curriculums, or utilized for training by distributors, wholesalers, manufacturers, and educators in need of continuing education. This comprehensive program is also appropriate for those seeking self-study opportunities in the areas of heating and air-conditioning system performance.

A Comprehensive Resource

System performance verification concepts are often scattered across multiple HVACR textbooks and references. This program brings those critical concepts together in one place, providing students and practicing technicians with techniques and procedures to:

  • verify proper system installation
  • maximize system efficiency
  • reduce call backs
  • improve equipment longevity

Areas of Competency Alignment

This program has been cross-walked or aligned to the HVAC Excellence Competency and Task List to assist instructors in providing their students with the HVAC knowledge and skills necessary for employment in the HVAC industry.

Training Textbook

System Performance, Maximizing Energy Efficiency, Second Edition

The System Performance training manual is divided into four sections. Each section covers the techniques and procedures required for a technician to maximize the energy efficiency of HVAC systems.

  1. Airflow
Covers the properties of air, airflow measuring tools, CFM calculations/requirements, blower performance, and sensible heat ratios.
  2. Critical Charging
Reviews the three charging methods: weight, system superheat, and condenser subcooling. This section provides examples of calculating total system charge based on line size and provides an easy method to verify that a system is operating at its rated capacity.
  3. Psychrometrics
Introduces the psychrometric chart and calculating the thermodynamic properties of air. This section demonstrates using wet- and dry-bulb temperatures to plot the conditions of air being heated or cooled which enables the technician to view a system’s effect on the sensible and latent heat load of a building.
  4. Combustion Analysis
Reviews the basic combustion process and the factors that affect heating efficiency. Proper methods for setting furnace airflow, adjustment and testing fuel pressure, and flue gas venting are covered.

Instructor Resource Materials

PowerPoint presentation: The instructor resource materials include four (4) PowerPoint presentations that correlate directly with each section of the book. Each slide contains speaker notes that are designed to aid the instructor through the presentation and provide additional talking points.

Instructor Guide: An instructional supplement with course objectives and lecture outlines to keep the program on track. Answers to student worksheets are also included. Instructor resource materials are available through digital download or on USB media.

Certification

A four-part System Performance Certification covering airflow, refrigerant charging, psychrometrics, and combustion efficiency, which tests a technician’s knowledge of the processes and procedures required to ensure HVAC systems are performing at maximum efficiency. Each of the four sections of the exam contain 25 questions.
