Residential Energy Auditor Curriculum

Energy Auditing: The New Norm

This 800-contact hour curriculum package is delivered in a modular design to allow instructors to utilize the entire curriculum or select specific subject modules to complement any existing HVACR program.


Energy Auditor House

The program can augment current HVACR curriculum and add skill sets to HVACR students, making them more valuable to future employers. The Residential Energy Auditor Curriculum contains: reference text recommendations, instructor guides with learning objectives and student outcomes defined, instructor talking points, PowerPoint presentations with speaker’s notes, review questions, lab exercises, and performance evaluations.


Module 1 - Orientation
Covers: energy audit overview, the energy auditor, diagnostic equipment, green awareness and technology.

Module 2 - Safety
Covers: safety and OSHA 10 certification.

Module 3 - General Competencies
Covers: math for technicians, computer literacy, and energy auditing software training.

Module 4 - Customer Relations
Covers: customer relations.

Module 5 - Mechanical Training
Covers: principles of AC&R, EPA Section 608, R-410A training, basics of heating systems, combustion analysis, basic electricity.

Module 6 - Mechanical & Envelope Evaluation
Covers: introduction to heat transfer, building envelope analysis, windows and doors, heat gain and heat loss calculations, mechanical data collection.

Module 7 - Airflow
Covers: airflow properties and measurements

Module 8 - Building Pressure Analysis
Covers: blower door, duct blaster lab

Module 9 - Infrared Imaging
Covers: introduction to infrared imaging

Module 10 - Indoor Environmental Quality
Covers: health and safety of carbon monoxide, mold, lead and asbestos

Module 11 - Baseload Measures
Covers: baseload measurements

Module 12 - Domestic Water
Covers: water heating systems, water auditing


Exams Offered

Both written and performance assessments are required to obtain a Residential Energy Auditor Certification.
