Using the Evolution of Heat Pump Technology to Understand Mini Split Ductless Systems

Presented by:   Ben Engelking

Tuesday, March 26 from 2:15 PM until 3:30 PM, Napa B

Objective: The HVAC Instructor will be able to teach: • The understanding of the function of the major components of a ductless system, • The fundamentals of the testing these components • The concepts of the efficiencies the system Summary: One method to help students to fully understand the functioning, components, controls and operational efficiencies of ductless systems, is to review of the “evolution” of heat pumps. The presentation starts with a simple air conditioning system and progresses step by step fashion showing improvements ending with the current ductless system. In doing so, a frame of reference is established so that the student understands the “why” of these upgrades and changes. Basic testing and system analysis and wiring diagrams are discussed. Variable speed systems integrated with Fan Laws are reviewed with reference to weather “BIN” data to demonstrate efficiency gains.
